In 1950, in the fishing village near Minamata Bay, some cats were found to have unsteady gait, cramps and paralysis, and finally jumped into the water and drowned, which was called "suicide cat" by the locals.。

In 1953, Minamata Town found a person with a strange disease, beginning with only slurred speech, unsteady gait, facial dementia, and then deafness and blindness, numbness, and finally nervous disorders, a sound sleep, a moment of abnormal excitement, the body curved bow, screaming and dying。

In 1956, more than 50 people were found in the area with the same symptoms。

After investigation and research into the disease, it was determined in 1962 that Minamata disease was caused by mercury pollution to the environment, especially chronic methylmercury poisoning caused by regular consumption of contaminated fish and shellfish。This was caused by the poisoning of fish and shellfish by methyl mercury chloride from factories in Minamata。

After Minamata town, in 1963, a large number of suicide cats and suicide dogs appeared in Niigata Prefecture, Japan。Minamata disease occurred again in 1973 in Ariake Town on the southern coast of the Ariake Sea。A total of more than 900 cases have been reported in these three episodes。In fact, in Japan, the number of victims far exceeds this figure, and there are about 10,000 victims in Minamata town alone。
